Jasmine Romero (she/her) is an author of YA and adult fantasy, dark fantasy, and horror that often blends genres. She writes dark, emotional stories about finding weird magic where you least expect it, and the messiness of being human.

Originally from SoCal, she left a piece of her heart in the depths of the ocean, and moved to Colorado to get lost in the woods. She received her BA in English and Comparative Literature, with a minor in Art, from California State University Fullerton, and currently works an office job to feed her chaotic corgi, Macaroni. When she isn't flipping through a book, you can find her playing video games with her husband, or doodling.

I was lucky enough to get to do a Q&A with my lovely friend Meg, where she asked me about my upcoming debut novel, FALLING STAR. One question was how many of my Kindle Vella episodes are making it into the book. I did mention I was still editing back in this Q&A but that was before I decided I needed to do so many more rewrites. So the answer is still mostly the same. The book is very different from its original form but the heart of it is there. If you read the original version, you’ll recognize things but.. Sometimes what we (us and our books) need the most, is a break. Any time I get stuck on a book, even when I sit down initially excited to write, it’s either because I’m burnt out, need to refill my creative well, or some element of my book isn’t working. Any sort of break can usually help remedy these types of blockages for me, though sometimes if something in my book isn’t working, that takes longer to crack (and sometimes even longer to admit to myself). Breaks are an important part of creating art, so make sure you’re taking care of your mind and body too! Your art will be better for it. I promise.

💫 I’m re-launching my newsletter!

2024 was one of the most reflective years I’ve ever had, with some of the most personal growth I’ve ever experienced. Because of that, I had to delay FALLING STAR several times, and now I’ve decided it’s just going to take the time it takes, and it’s okay if that means it’s published in 2025.

2025 is also going to be the year I do things I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but have either been too afraid, too stressed, or put too much pressure on myself to get them started. Hence this newsletter!

When you subscribe, you’ll receive quarterly emails from me, unless I have extra special things to share–then I might pop in a few more times than usual.

I’m calling this my liminal space because it’s a place I’ll occupy between projects, between thoughts, between here and the next thing. These places can often be lonely, as can the act of creating, so if you happen to feel that way, I hope this letter makes you feel a little less alone.

One of the artists I commissioned art for Falling Star associated the story with the quote “A true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.” - Elizabeth Gilbert

This quote is perfect for Asterin and Evrin and Falling Star, because that’s exactly what they are. Mirrors of one another, who take completely different paths.

A poem that I saw years ago that really had me thinking about monstrous soulmates and love turned sour was by Farawaypoetry. “There’s no hiding from your soul mate: they will find you, you will fall, and they will stay.” And that was so ominous and threatening to me, it sent images of fallen gods through my head, chasing each other into the next life. And now we have Falling Star!

There’s a difference! Some of the best villains and/or antagonists are the ones we understand, pity, but ultimately can’t forgive. We might almost even wish we could. But can you forgive a monster? And the monsters might even vary, depending on who the main villain of a story is.

Falling Star is full of morally gray characters, but there are some whose actions cross that point of no return. I can’t wait for you to read the book when it’s ready!! In my last semester of college, I was in the biggest reading slump of my life. I took a digital narrative illustration class with my friend, and we had to choose a book or series to base each of our projects on over the course of the semester. My friend chose the Shadow and Bone trilogy and told me all about it. Her illustrations were so amazing and her love for the series pushed me to go buy the trilogy with a gift card my aunt gave me for graduation. I finally had time to read again, so why not?

I devoured every one of Leigh Bardugo’s books after that. I fell back in love with reading, I read 20+ books that year. I went to YALLWEST and met all my favorite authors, went to panels, got to meet Leigh, and finally found inspiration for so many different story ideas. I finally had stories I wanted to tell. I started teaching myself craft and story structure. I followed publishers and agents and other authors online. I read so many books that made me realize I could write about my identity and experiences and there would actually be people that would want to read them.

We don’t all have the same 24 hours. I don’t even have all the same 24 hours, consistently, every single day. And my days will certainly look different from someone else’s. Not everyone is able-bodied, people get tired, some people have kids, some have more than one job, some go to school. Sometimes we do have a day off and we’re just exhausted. Just because we all have 24 hours in a day, doesn’t mean they look and feel the same for every person.

I think that idea is helpful, in the sense that it’s telling you that we all have time, we just choose how we spend it. It’s not that I don’t have time to write, it’s just that I have other things I want or need to do too. But it’s important that I recognize I do have the time to write, if I set aside some time for it instead of one of the other things I wanted to do. But it’s probably not going to be every day.

You don’t need to write for hours and hours, every day, to finish a book. You can set aside time here and there. You can do the things you want to do. It just won’t might not be every day, and all at once.
